Fantastic toy
This train set is awesome. Directions are a bit confusing, but its a great toy. Kids (and parents) have a lot of fun playing with this. Its plastic construction is well built and withstands a three year old playing with it. The tracks go together really easy, and they stay together really well during play. It has several action sections that keep kids attention during play, providing even more fun. The detail is pretty decent. The train does have a slight tendency to derail occasionally. I highly recommend this.

Great Trackmaster set, with options for the easily frustrated child!
We have a six-year-old and an almost-three-year-old in our house -- and both are train-obsessed. We love the trackmaster sets because they give the same "feel" as a real train set (with a self-propelled train), but are safe and tough enough to take a real beating from kids. (Seriously, my boys have dropped these trains down hardwood steps before, and they come up kicking.) We had the big mountain set, and that was a pain to put (and keep) together, and it didn't seem as sturdy. This one is fantastic, so far, and was a hit Christmas present. What I LOVE is that there's an extra piece so you don't have to use the "swinging crane" feature, which was frustrating for our two-year-old (because you have to swing it back each time Thomas passes). We put the fixed track in place, and voila! No need to constantly reset the crane. The castle gate can also be locked into the "open" position. When my six-year-old plays, he likes the more interactive features and tries to beat Thomas to the broken track. Swapping out the fixed track for the swinging crane involves removing (or replacing) one piece, so it's very simple. I love this set. Definitely recommend.

Decent product
I purchased this for my 3 yr old for Christlmas. It was easy to assemble for an adult and all 3 of my kids played with it for about an hour. My 8 yr old lost interest after first hour, but my 3 and 5 yr old played with it for another hour or 2 before moving on to other new toys. We had other track that worked with this set and were able to add on to make it bigger. I think this helped keep the kids interested longer, since we could reconfigure with the additional track. My only concern is how long the train will last. The kids had a hard time resetting the gate and bridge before it came back around. Many times it fell off the track or got stuck in the castle gate...I am just picturing all these tiny plastic gears rounding off inside the Engine. I showed them how to lock the gate up and we put the extra track in place so they wouldn't need to reset it evertime...but it just wasn't as much fun for them that way. Time will tell.

The trifold printed instruction is absolutely useless. You may as well watch the assembled picture ...
The train set is huge and takes up a lot of space. The trifold printed instruction is absolutely useless. You may as well watch the assembled picture of the box to see how the train set is put together. The configuration is fixed and I think my kid will only be interested in it for a few days before getting bored. There is no variation and no education value at all. Disappointed.

Love It!
I honestly have nothing negative to say about this Thomas set! We bought it for our 4-year-old Thomas fan for Christmas while it was on sale ($35!) and he LOVES it! We LOVE it! Our 2-year-old loves it, too! Great, great set! It's also a BIG set, which is a nice change from the typical oval layout so many of the Thomas sets seem to come in. It also has SO many different things going on that none of us ever get bored! The bridge sides fall over, there is a missing track piece that swings into place, you go up a curve up the mountain, there is a falling gate, and then the big finale when Thomas crashes through the mine and finds the gold crown! We have a lot of Thomas sets and this is by far our favorite so far!

An amazing train for a Thomas fan
We got this as a Christmas present for out 3+ year old son who loves this character and show. It is BIG, bigger then you think once assembled and does not all fit onto a standard child's play table. The crane section I ended up removing and using the curved pieces to make the set "shorter" and also easier to use as that section requires a manual reset each loop which is no good for some children. The rest of the set can be left running on its own. The engine part uses a single AA battery so cheap to run.

A fun and entertaining toy
We purchased this train set for our 3 yr old for Christmas. We had it set up in front of the tree. He was so excited to receive it. Our son spent all of Christmas Day playing with it and did not want to open any other toy. One thing that is annoying about this set is that while the train runs on its own, it requires the user to correct things on the track each go around (put the castle gate up, swing the connecting bridge back to startig position, put up the bridge rails and place the crown back into its compartment. Our 3 y/o needs Mommy/Daddy help each time to make sure the train runs smoothly on its next route. It would be nice if some parts of the set automatically went back to starting position. Overall, a great buy and very happy with our purchase.

Not the same as in picture.
ours is close, but it doesnt have the top loop of track at the top of the castle. It was much cheaper and works well except for the thomas train that came in the package. Thomas' gears click right from the start and dont mesh up right. We have 3 other trackmaster trains that do well on this track, but the Thomas we got was crap.

Recommend this to any parent with a kid who likes trains. My son grew a little bored with trying to set it up, he's 2. However, when it is set up he watches the train go and loves it.

My son is just 1.5 years old and loves this track, knows how to set up the bridge and the crown, and can watch thomas and reset the track for hours! Great buy!
